The meetings are complete

Finally, the week of meetings has come to an end. It was a great week at work. We got to meet as a team (some of us are not local to my office) and discuss the future priorities for the coming year. Many great improvements planned.

something about sitting in a conference room from 8ish AM to 5ish PM day after day is exhausting…

This weekend should be extremely busy as well. One of my friends (co-worker as well) is coming in from Canada and we’re planning to meet up tomorrow. Looking forward to that – don’t get to hang out with him too much and he’s a great guy. It’s really funny how similar we actually are. Also going to a confirmation (I think that’s what it’s called,, apologies, I’m not catholic, and I just don’t remember) tomorrow for my niece. Then, on Sunday I have a meeting at temple. Once that is done, I hope to take Little Man to meet up with Matt.

….what an exhausting week though…. wwhhewww..

Wedding and Violence

Did I catch your attention? lol

Went to a friend’s wedding yesterday. Steve has been a friend for quite a few years now. Actually, used to be my boss as well. He’s the one who hired me into the company I’m at. Very good person. It was really great to see him so happy, he’s finally found the right woman to spend his life with. The ceremony was at his church down in Laguna. Being Buddhist, I guess I’ve become unfamiliar with how often god in mentioned in a Christian church. hahaha. But it was wonderful, he was just beaming with happiness. The reception was very nicely done as well. They had it in one of the large halls at the Marriot in Dana Point; very classy.

Then, Dawn and I went to see 300. It was cool, but, honestly with all the hype I expected so much more. The visuals were good, but no where near what I expected. The story seemed almost non-existent, and I hate to say it, but the scenes were just the same thing over and over. I guess that last part makes sense considering it’s subject. I’d recommend you see it, but, it’s just not as good as I thought it would be. Oh well, Curse of The Golden Flower comes out this Tuesday on DVD – soooo can’t wait…

the countdown

just counting the days until March 16th….. soon…. so soon….

the stress should be better on that day. The massive project will be coming to an end… and oh, am I looking forward to it.

8apps

8apps – Social Networking for Productive People

This is a new ‘social network’ for productive people. The following link has a great overview and instructions on how to receive an invite.
http://jonkenpon.com/2007/01/17/8appscom-launched/
I’ve began using this and found that it has very interesting potential. Orchestrate is a task management app and so far it’s looking like a viable solution. I do very much enjoy the Ajax built into this as well. Call me a sucker, but Ajax has a level of finesse unmatched by any else on the web. Also included are Blueprint, a brainstorming app, as well as Handshake, a social networking app (hence, social network for productive people’). I’m spending time to learn each of them to see what role they will hopefully play in my productivity and will keep you posted.

Please let me know if you join as well.

emptiness…

Emptiness. What is your first thought when you read that word?……………

I think in the west, we’re taught culturally that empty is a negative, or unfulfilled word. We believe if we don’t have things, stuff, junk really, our lives are in some way destined to be empty. It’s a hard mind-frame to get out of at times. Everywhere we look – advertising. Messages about how much of a better life we’d be allowed if we just have this product, or that thing. And at times we really can believe this. It’s weird when you step back and think about it.

Then we come to what I intended to write about when I fired up ecto. The buddhist definition of emptiness. One of the most famous passages from the sutra states, “All phenomena are like a dream, illusion, bubble, or shadow; they are like dew or lightning. You should meditate upon them thus.” Another I like to think about states, “form is emptiness and emptiness is form.” In summary, or, for those unfamiliar with buddhist thought, you can say that all phenomena is insubstantial on it’s own. A good example is this:

Pick up a pen.
What makes it pen? What gives it “pen-ness”?
Does it, itself make it a pen?
No.
The experience between you, what your understanding is, and the pen – all together – that is what makes it pen; what gives it “pen-ness”.
Think of if a dog got ahold of that very same pen.
To the dog, would it be a pen? Would it have “pen-ness”?
No.
Likely, the dog would see it as a chew toy or something to that effect. Therefore, between the dog, the dog’s understanding, and the pen, it would have no “pen-ness”.

I had a moment of understanding about this the other day in conversation with one of my friends at work. I had just looked at my watch and noticed that it was already 2:30PM. I thought to myself ‘the day sure is flying by’. Not a second later he brought up “can you believe it’s only 2:30? Wow today is dragging!” I kind of giggled to myself and chose to stay quiet, replying with just a smile.

Time itself is also empty.
