Skin+Bones – follow up post

On Wednesday, Ethan and I went to MOCA‘s SKIN + BONES: PARALLEL PRACTICES IN FASHION AND ARCHITECTURE exhibit, which was hosted by Dwell Magazine. Arriving at 7:05, there were not a heck of a lot of people there yet, though that would change quickly. Though they were serving hors d’oeuvres and wine, we skipped it and went directly into the exhibit. (I don’t drink anyways, precepts and all ;) )

The way it flowed was very well planned out. Starting off with a room devoted to a fashion designers ‘layering’ exhibit, it really began your experience with an easy and direct understanding of how fashion and architecture were, in fact, related. I believe the name was even shelter, but don’t completely remember. Around the corner came what turned out to be Ethan’s favorite piece of the exhibit; a somewhat deconstruction of men’s dress shirts – each folded and pieced together uniquely. The next piece that really sticks in my mind was a section of this building commissioned by 19 Arabs countries. The display explained that one side had a very traditional arab look, then the opposite side was to be the ‘western translation’ of it. They had a section of the wall of this translation. Imagine an entire wall of separate sections constructed of steel; each section having many large camera-like apertures that would react to light via sensors therefore changing the amount of light allowed into the building. Brilliant. One of the other pieces that both of us were impressed with was actually a dress.

the picture does not do it justice, and though I couldn’t imagine a woman wearing it would find it comfortable or even livable, looking at it in person was interesting. Your eyes could not focus on the majority of the dress! Likely due to what it was made from, and how it was constructed, but none-the-less strange. As we continued on through the exhibit the fashion became less, and the architecture took over. Frank Gehry‘s working models of the Walt Disney Concert Hall were great to see, especially since that is where we parked (across the street from MOCA) and walked from. I was really hoping to see more of the Curtain Wall House

but no such luck. Oh well. The final part of the exhibit was devoted to a ‘mist house’ that was created during a Swiss expo. The structure was created in a lake, then the ‘building’ itself had walls constructed of 400+ mist sprays sourced from the lake. People then wore computer controlled raincoats to visit the building and as they walked through, they would light up with colors when another person matched, therefore promoting conversation. This sounded like it would have been a great experience to be part of; quite interesting.

Ethan and I really enjoyed the exhibit.

and it already starts….

So today, Little Man went to his friend’s house to play. He always has a good time playing with her. Dawn called me on the way home after hearing a story about how the day went from his friend’s mom.

So, the kids are playing in her room and the mom went up to check on them. When she got upstairs the girl’s bedroom door was closed (not how she left it). She opened the door to find her daughter, completely naked, trying to put on her Disney princess dress.

……you can imagine my reaction. Jokingly: “That’s my boy!!!!:) hahaha

iPhone and Apple TV

Let me just say – I was blown away with today’s Macworld announcements. We all knew the ‘iTV’ was due out, and it does look awesome. At $299 it really looks like a great device. Then there is the iPhone. WOW. A lot of people had speculated about it for a looooong time now.

Recently, we switched over to Verizon, from Cingular since I was sick of dropped calls. I really hope it has been fixed because this thing could actually get me to switch back. The capabilities on the phone are amazing, and the potential for ‘what’s to come’ after this device is endless. Yes, I’m really excited about this. Really.

TUAW.com was ‘liveblogging’ the event today, and admittedly I spent a little time on that site today. hahaha. But this is really cool stuff.

Here’s an interesting example of the impact this announcement had today:
“Apple’s one-button bounce on the day was a stunning $6.1 billion”

Investors dump RIM as Apple launches iPhone

yes folks, oh the times they are a (hopefully) changin’. :) hahaha

The Rest of Everest

Those of you who know me, know I enjoy hiking now and then. TioTony is really the one who got me a lot more into it, and for that, I’m quite thankful. Now, in what seems to have become my near-monthly review of iTunes for new podcasts, I’ve found one that looks seriously interesting. Not that my vintage 4th gen black and white click-wheel iPod will play them, but none the less I’ve subscribed.

It promises ‘An Almost Unabridged Expedition Experience’. Can’t wait to watch these. Enjoy.

Skin+Bones

So I am FINALLY going to see the Skin+Bones Parallel Practices in Fashion and Architecture exhibit at MOCA next Wednesday. Tricia and I had planned to go during her last visit but got a late start and were unable to get there in time. Now, one of my favorite magazines Dwell is having a private viewing for their readers. Ethan and I plan to go – I’m quite looking forward to it.

Happy New Year

Well, it’s the end of the year and I’m wondering where the heck it went. Time flew by, but I gather that is normal once parenthood becomes your life. And I can honestly say, I wouldn’t trade it for the world. Having our Little Man around is the most amazing thing that’s ever happened to me. My opinion may have a small bit of bias, ;) but I think he is brilliant. Each day he does something that astonishes me. Just the other day, xmas actually, he picked up a present and correctly stated who it was from – may have just been a good guess, but none the less was great.

I’ve decided to make a few resolutions this year as well. Yes, I know, how cliche, but what the heck:

  1. Meditate more often. This is a big one, and I’ve purposely stated it first. Without this, I do not expect any other resolutions to get very far. Say what you will, but a focused and clear mind will accomplish anything.
  2. Commit myself to more excercise. Not only physically, but mentally as well.
  3. Pay off the dang credit card. Enough said.
  4. Integrate the GTD system into both my work and personal life heavily.
  5. Write more. I have had many ideas to write about; this is the year to get off my arse and do something about them.

Life is really good. Everything at home is really great, and I can still say with complete honesty that I really enjoy my job. My assumption is that a good percentage of people in this world cannot make that statement. I consider myself very fortunate though. I work for a great company, that has a future. I have a really cool boss that I also consider a personal friend. And, the team I work with includes people whom I consider some of my closest friends.

And what would this post be without mentioning my beautiful Dawn. She is my strength. Dawn, I love you.

Happy New Year everyone.

Rick, follow me I’m right behind you

We recently returned from a visit to my parents house. It’s always good to go see them, but, I must admit, Lompoc is a strange place to me. (and if you haven’t heard of Lompoc, no worries, that’s normal… hahaha no one knows where it is.) Dad tells me it was once the flower seed capital of the country. I can’t believe this, but doing a quick search on youtube brought up a video of the ‘Lompoc Valley Flower Fields’:

Just another example of my long belief that anything you want to find is really on the internet. hahahaha….

I’m always told that it should be no longer than a 3-4 hour drive from my home, but it is actually a 5-6 hour drive….. EVERY frigin time. This is where the entry title comes in: ‘Rick, follow me I’m right behind you’. There was a huge big rig that we passed on the way. Someone had written that in the dirt on the back of it. Then, we got stuck in traffic. About 45 minutes later, we passed the same truck again. Now mind you – there is only one route up where we were and Dawn and I did not remember the truck passing us, but sure enough we passed it again. We agreed that while the statement makes little to no sense, it was the theme of our driving trip. Don’t know who Rick is, but I’m sure he’s as strange as our Twilight Zone’ish journey up there. Each time the place gets further away. (think the forever stretching hallway in Poltergeist)

Well, enough about the trip; all in all is was great to see my parents, and Little Man had a blast with Grandpa & Grandma.
