Disturbing

So tonight we were driving home and I happened to see a disturbing bumper sticker that I just had to comment on. It was a marine corp sticker that stated “give war a chance”. Though I know we’re in a war currently (but I’ll leave that comment alone – don’t get me started on that one) it amazes me that there are people in this world that are that ignorant.

Then, I started reading CNN.com and read about the backlash on an article that was published in AsianWeek magazine. I’m not even going to bring up what it was about on here, it was horrid though. Here’s a link to the CNN.com article.

I guess sometimes people can be so disappointing…..

Renunciation

Quite a few Catholics that I know are having their time of lent now. (or it may have just ended, apologies for not knowing exactly. Is it a week, or the full 40 days?)

I can relate to this in some ways. On one hand; Buddhist retreats I’ve gone to have been put together in such a way that you give up things during the time you’re there. Whether it’s:

  • eating a full dinner at night (they’re quite easy on us with this, compared to the Theravadan monastics, whom do not eat anything past noon – ever)
  • sleeping in comfort (typically a blanket and the floor – or the worlds stiffest bed)
  • wearing jewelry (admittedly an easy one for me)
  • living in silence (sounds wonderful, but let me tell you – this is SERIOUSLY hard)
  • and quite a few others, but you get my point

each of the pieces you give up provide a very direct way of learning. If you think of not wearing jewelry, you consider that it truly is ego that wears the jewelry. If you think of sleeping in comfort, you think of making every waking moment one of practice.

And, on another hand, I’ve personally decided to give up some things for life. Meat. I’m a fairly strict vegetarian. If a sentient being had to die – through skillful means I cannot consider making that my meal. Alcohol. I do not drink. Period. These are personal choices I’ve made. Vegetarianism came from seeing no other choice in my own practice. Giving up alcohol came from very specific vows I took.

So, to my Catholic friends; good luck to you. May each of you find peace in your practice. May your choice to give up, whatever it may be, help you in your life. I know my choices on the things I’ve given up have truly helped me.

BoKlok

IKEA is now in the prefab business.

Unfortunately it’s not currently in the US. Only Scandinavia, and the UK. Well, hopefully it will come here soon, I would love to see new developments all built this way, and IKEA has the ability to bring good design to the masses with their prices.

Next issue of the magazine

Well, the last issue was cancelled due to end of year busyness. So, we’ve gone ahead and used that month’s content, and added to it. I wish I would have had more time to write, and modify, but with life/work being as it is lately, that was just not possible.

Overall I’m still very happy we’ve received as much input from others to include. The group is really coming together for the content and that can only strengthen the magazine. I need to get the website to where it needs to go —- urgently. The people on 8apps have been quite helpful in sharing ideas when I posed a question about using WordPress as a CMS. And I’m so thankful to all of them.

why can’t i stop coughing

I’m sitting at home right now. Dawn and Little Man are both asleep. I wish I was but every time I lay down I just go into fits of coughing. This is completely lame. Nothing new though – almost every time I’ve been sick while growing up it would turn into bronchitis. Hopefully it doesn’t this time. I do feel better than yesterday, got some good sleep last night – well, after an hour and a half coughing fit that also kept Dawn up. (sorry my beautiful)

I know tonight is going to be a late night to (more on that later) and I have to be at work at dark/thirty tomorrow due to a training session I need to ensure goes well. It’s likely I’ll get some rest this weekend though. Hopefully. Maybe. Eh?!?!

Well, enough of the cough medicine talk. Type at you later.

Weekend

We had planned to make it so I would get quiet time at home today. I even skipped a trip to Joshua Tree with TioTony and Tricia today, because I needed quiet time. Well, unfortunately I started getting a sore throat yesterday and Little Man started getting boogie nose. So we’re all having a slow day today. Oh well – I just hope everyone feels better.
